Portuguese Healthcare System Expats.

City Hospitals - Rural Hospitals

Most of the major hospitals in the main cities and resort towns where there is a large concentration of foreign residents do have English speaking doctors. Some rural areas such as central and north eastern Portugal do suffer from limited hospital facilities. Post hospital care can be quite limited in these areas if you are used to the northern European standards like the NHS of the UK or North America.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the health care system in Portugal doesn’t have the spending power of most of the more affluent countries in Europe and the budget per person for Portugal’s health care system falls short of most EU countries. The budget has improved over the past few years. A lot of private health care companies operate hand in hand with the Portuguese health care system.

Portuguese Public Health Care

The Portuguese public health care system provides a free at the point of contact service, or sometimes a small fee is required. This service is intended for those who contribute to the Portuguese social security system. Some prescriptions are subsidised for the over 65s mainly non-essential medicines, dentist treatments including dentures, optician visits and spectacles.

Do you qualify (rivised)

Once you are registered as resident in Portugal you are entitled to state healthcare. Enrol at your local health centre and get a user’s ID number by showing your residence certificate. You won’t get a NISS (social security number) unless you’re working or are the dependant of someone who’s working.

Healthy Body Heathy Mind

Lets face it, one of if not the most important thing in our lives is having and maintaining good health & fitness of body.

Portuguese health care is on the whole good but where you live will determine the quality of the facilities and treatment. The health care system in Portugal has got a lot better over the last few years but can still fall short of what you are used to depending what country you come from.
